It was on 28 July 1914 – a month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked a diplomatic crisis across Europe – that the opening shots of ‘the war to end all wars’ were fired, as Austria-Hungary prepared to invade Serbia. On the eve of Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on 4 August, with German forces occupying neutral Belgium, British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey is said to have remarked: “The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” Four years later, the First World War had claimed almost 17 million lives.

Company of Four is a short film made by local film maker, writer and actor Harry Walters. . Over just two months, Harry wrote the script and called on his fellow film enthusiasts, including Benedict Webb, the film’s director, to put together a schedule for shooting the film. Permissions were sought to film at locations in Crowborough and the Bluebell Railway. The shooting schedule was extremely tight as several of the actors and production crew who were either working or preparing to go off to university, had to juggle to find a time in which everyone was available. You can see the results of their work as the film is premiered on Tuesday 23 October at Beacon Academy School. We hope the residents of Crowborough will come out and support Harry & his friends and at the same time remember all those young men who gave the ultimate sacrifice, many of whom are commemorated on the town’s War memorial.
